Chapter 22

Aisha strode back down the hallway, Aaron her silent sentinel. What had he thought of that confrontation in the lab? She hadn't expected him to come to her defense. It had felt good, working together, like they were a team. He was silent now. She couldn't read him. "You don't have to follow me to my apartment," she said abruptly. He didn't even turn to look at her.

"Of course I'm coming," he said.

"But you don't need to," Aisha insisted, "I'm not in any danger."

He scoffed. "And those hunters who attacked you? Or that rogue vampire?"

"The hunters are in prison, and the vampire didn't attack me, he wasn't a threat."

"He was halfway to losing himself," Aaron said grimly, turning to face her and stopping her as they exited the building.

"He wouldn't have hurt me."

"You don't know that," Aaron said. "You haven't spent time with vampires like him, vampires on the edge. You've been lucky."

"Lucky? I wouldn't call this lucky. The poison? The attack? Working my fingers to the bone trying to understand what's going on?"

His gaze faltered and he shook his head. "That's not what I meant. I can see that you..." He broke off, as if fighting some internal battle within himself. Aisha didn't have time for him to reach his conclusion. She’d wasted enough time on Davies. She had to get to her apartment and find her files before more vampires fell sick.

"Fine," she said with a sigh. "Fine, you can come, just..." Just what? Just tell me how you feel about me? Just tell me if you remember? Aisha didn't ask that. She had no right to know what he thought. She had to focus on the job. She pulled free from his grip and walked towards their car. Getting in, she rested her hands on the steering wheel and breathed quietly into the silent vehicle. She could see Aaron still standing outside the lab, a dark shadowy shape. He sent her off balance. The way she felt around him. She closed her eyes, squeezing them shut as if she could force that fluttery feeling out of her chest. The passenger door opened suddenly and she jumped, shocked out of her thoughts.

"I'm sorry. I don't normally invite people to my apartment," she said abruptly, realizing why she’d been pushing him away. "I keep my life separate, compartmentalized." She tried to smile. "It's probably not healthy, but it's what I've always done. I'm not... good at letting people in."

"I understand," he said, his voice low. "You keep your cards close to your chest. You need your solitude and a place of your own." He turned toward her and Aisha found herself leaning toward him, like a flower to the sun, she couldn't control it. It was instinctive. The outside world seemed to fall away as the air inside the car began to heat. What was it about his presence that affected her so deeply? Why couldn't she just treat him like one of the other vampires she worked with? Why did he always get so deep under her skin?

"I have always needed the same," he said.
